BOB ST. CLAIR
-TOUGH-
TAILGATER tm
With the NFL’s regular season in full swing, a guide to tailgating around the stadium was in good order. Based on food, fan enthusiasm and tailgating tradition it was now time for someone to step up an take hold of this great American pastime….and someone has.
Greg St. Clair, son of former 49er great Bob St.Clair (Hall of Fame member and ‘raw' meat aficionado), came up with the idea to make stadium tailgating a palatable competition while also showing support for the 49ers and their new head coach, Mike Singletary.
With the help of pre-game radio shock jocks - Lamont and Tonelli of 107.7 The Bone and 49er great R. C. ‘Alley Oop’ Owens, a challenge was made to the 49ers fans stating; “If you are tough enough to support the 49ers and their new coach, Mike Singletary, then let's see if you are tough enough to be one of Bob St. Clair’s Tough Tailgaters. If so, "Honk your Horn's!”
Just then the parking lot exploded with a deafening roar of car horns. With the thunderous approval of the fans, Greg and Bob set out to search for the parking lots’ Toughest Tailgaters.
Making their journey through a sea of red (including the meat), Bob and Greg set out to find the true Masters’ of the Grill who think they’re tough enough to share a slice of raw meat with the Hall of Famer.
As the aroma of the portable barbecue pits and grills enveloped the sky with a charcoal haze, St. Clair and his entourage were drawn into the tailgating encampments where they were warmly welcomed as if they were gladiators returning to the arena to do battle.
After an inspection of their hosts’ hors de oeuvres, the raw meat challenge was presented. A handful of courageous fans stepped forward to take on the task, but only a few could stomach the competition. St. Clair gladly embraced the survivors then announced that the challenge had been met. The fans went wild.
Bob took photos with the winners and awarded them a barbeque apron with the words Bob St. Clair’s Tough Tailgater written in bold letters. The apron had a fantastic 1957 photo of Bob eating a huge raw steak while adorned in his 49er uniform.
Fans rushed in from all over the parking lots to witness the spectacle of raw meat being devoured, to take pictures with the former 49er great, and to get a few autographs. It was a fantastic day for all and then there’s really only one question left to ask--“Are You Tough Enough to be 1 of Bob St. Clair’s Tough Tailgaters !!”
